Both basic and applied research conducted at CABIMER relies on the use of model organisms such as E. coli, S. cerevisiae, and C. elegans.
Model organism Unit
SCIENTIFIC COORDINATOR:
The Unit offers technical assistance on these organisms and their applications, while also addressing the essential needs for solutions and buffers for molecular biology in labs.
Currently, these organisms are used at two levels:
• Organisms used as research tools (genetic engineering, ectopic expression of recombinant proteins, in vivo gene expression assays, etc.).
• Organisms used as living models for studying specific cellular processes, such as genetic stability, chromosomal segregation, gene expression, or chromatin dynamics.
The service provided by this Unit primarily covers the following aspects:
• Preparation of general solutions and culture media.
• Preparation of chemical and electrocompetent cells.
• Extraction and homogenization of biomass for the purification of protein complexes.
• Organization and maintenance of general collections of model organisms.
• Laminar Flow and Extraction Hoods (Telstar and Cruma).
• Sartorius Fermenter with Integrated Homogenization System (Panda 2K).
• Micromanipulator: Equipment funded by the I+D+I Infrastructure and Equipment Aid for public entities (Reference IE19-101-USE), granted by Consejería de Transformación Económica, Industria, Conocimiento y Universidades (PAIDI 2020).
• Carbon Dioxide Snow Generation Apparatus: Equipment funded by the I+D+I Infrastructure and Equipment Aid for public entities (Reference IE19-101-USE), granted by Consejería de Transformación Económica, Industria, Conocimiento y Universidades (PAIDI 2020).
• Automatic Plate Dispenser: Equipment funded by the I+D+I Infrastructure and Equipment Aid for public entities (Reference IE19-101-USE), granted by Consejería de Transformación Económica, Industria, Conocimiento y Universidades (PAIDI 2020).
• Others: Small equipment such as magnetic stirrers and heaters, pH meters, balances, etc.
